The Problem

First off, what is period poverty?

Period poverty is when a menstruator is experiencing a constant lack of access to proper period supplies. Beyond the stigma of menstruation that makes it difficult for people to express their need for period supplies, factors such as high costs, taxes, and inconsistency in nonprofits’ inventory of period supplies all contribute to this lack of access.

You might ask, is it really that big of a problem if a menstruator does not have period supplies? Well, those who experience period poverty may resort to unsanitary means to manage their flow, which can lead to physical health issues like toxic shock syndrome. The constant worry of how to handle one’s period leads to increased feelings of depression and anxiety, as this is a monthly, recurring issue. If these physical and mental health effects of period poverty weren’t enough of a burden, this issue also has an economic impact on menstruators in need, as they may be forced to miss important opportunities, such as school or work, when they can’t manage their flow.

According to the National Alliance for Period supplies, 1 in every 4 women in the U.S. struggle to obtain period products

Did you know that 1 in 5 women of menstruating age live below the poverty line in Arizona?

Period supplies are taxed as a luxury item between 7.6-11.2%  in Arizona.
